I then book directly with the rental car, airline, hotel, opera tickets, etc.
This is based on a snafu with a travel portal several years back when a hotel charged me for the entire stay when it was only to charge one day as a deposit till I arrived. The travel portal was very flat footed, not helpful, evasive, put me on hold, couldn’t find a supervisor, etc. When I called the hotel and reminded them that the listing explicated stated “one day deposit”, they could not find the manager. When I threaten to call the credit card company, the manager suddenly picked up the phone!! After some wrangling, the entire booking was reversed. I found alternate accommodations.

The last thing I need is a third party involved when I’m trying to fix an airline snafu (especially) or a hotel problem. I don’t even understand why people do use them.

I don’t care for Expedia but there were small (local) hotels and apartments on there that were hard to find otherwise. I also booked some excursions. Now, I rarely find what I am looking for. For an upcoming trip, I was searching for city center hotels in a few smaller European cities. Chase had zero listed. Cap 1, had dozens (or more) in each place. They are really behind all of the other travel portals when it comes to the smaller hotels and having apartments listed.

Some (I) have been pleased with Costco travel packages and service.
Cobranded Chase/ United card didn’t offer discounted rates for my upcoming trip in January 2024

When trying to find hotels who include free breakfast with their booking, Chase doesn’t offer that option. Booking.com and Agoda do. Second, in many cases, the prices that Chase search results return are often higher than the prices their competitors return, for the exact same room at the exact same property on the exact same date(s). So the claim that Ultimate Rewards points are worth 25% more when used for travel is misleading. If the cost to travel is 25% higher for using the Chase portal, then it’s a wash. I am transferring all of my UR points to airline and/or hotel partners on a 1 to 1 basis.

I much prefer booking through the airline directly. Hotels are the periodic exception via the various “special, proprietary” programs like Chase’s The Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection or Amex’s FHR.

Two months to settle a rental car claim eventually solved by Chase banking making a customer retaining decision.
Beware of their rental car program. They use a third party supplier (carrentals) and do not respond to fraudulent surcharges originating at time of car pick up. I gave Chase Travel the boot and their Sapphire credit card too.
ZERO customer service- Multiple phone calls-TWO months to resolve a $45 rental and only resolved because my Private Client banking representative refunded the rental charge (for a car refused at pick up) from Chase Corporate.
