Chase has made things a little bit easier and more transparent with points-earning for the Sapphire Preferred Card.
You earn double points on all travel and dining spend. Now you can see, transaction-by-transaction, the points you earn for each.
So if you go into your account activity, when you click the blue ‘plus’ on the left of each transaction, when it expands you can see the points earned for that transaction.
Here’s an Uber transaction that correctly earned double points with the Sapphire Preferred card.
‘First Friday’ points (triple points for dining the first friday of each month) display correctly as well.
This feature isn’t (yet?) available for my other Chase Ultimate Rewards cards like Ink Plus or other co-brand cards like the Hyatt Visa.

It doesn’t seem like this has been implemented properly. It shows me as earning fractional points. For example if I spent $23.46 it shows that I have earned 23.46 points.
I noticed this feature and like it. If only they could figure out a way to make UR mall purchases do this. That way I could just return items that don’t credit as soon as they arrive.
Would love for them to implement this on Palladium — I can never seem to tell if the various transportation providers I use (Uber, Sidecar, Lyft, Flywheel, etc) count as travel spend or not
Looks like this has been implemented on the Chase Amazon Visa as well. Very nice.
@Seth You do get fractional points. If you have one transaction for $23.46 and another for $10.54, you get a total of 34 points. The fractional part for your total account statement doesn’t make it into your points, but if you have 1001 transactions of $0.25, you still get 250 points at the end of the month. Not sure if that last 1/4 of a point carries over to the next month or not, though.
@FM – they figure if you have a Palladium card you aren’t looking closely at your points? You’re too busy counting your money? 🙂
Hmm, an inflight snack I purchased onboard AA failed to earn 2x — even though that’s dining and travel at the same time!
Also curiously, a coffee shop using Square correctly showed up as 2x dining, but a taxi driver who used Square earned me only 1x.
Delta onboard also not showing up as either travel or dining.
United on-board purchase credited as travel.
